The Future of Co-Working Spaces: 5 Benefits of Joining a Communal Work Space

The Future of Co-Working Spaces: 5 Benefits of Joining a Communal Work Space

Remote and hybrid setups have quickly transitioned from a temporary solution to the new norm for many workplaces, challenging the traditional office model. With this comes the popularization of remote-worker-friendly concepts, including co-working spaces.

⁤As the desire for tranquil work environments outside the home grew, the appeal of co-working spaces became increasingly clear. Know more about these communal working spaces as we delve into their purposes and benefits!

Benefits of Joining Co-Working Spaces

Before co-working spaces became the well-known concept it is now, it was simply a solution for entrepreneurs who wanted to work outside their homes. In 2002, two Austrians created a collaborative workspace for startups, freelancers, and the like, but the term “co-working space” wouldn’t officially be used until 2005.

In 2005, Brad Neuberg created the first communal work space. Though the idea didn’t take off immediately, it steadily grew in popularity over the years. Nowadays, it has become the norm for remote workers to join co-working spaces, and here’s why:

1. Provides Communal Work Space Outside the House

Whether you live at home with your family or in a condo unit with a roommate, there are many factors that can distract you from your work. Co-working spaces provide a peaceful environment to work outside your home. Here, you can access the tools you need to work efficiently, such as a fast internet connection and office equipment.

At the same time, you can still plan your own schedule. Co-working spaces don’t force you into a 9-to-5 schedule like traditional offices do — you may come and go as you please.

2. Offers Flexible Layouts of Working Spaces

Co-working spaces offer different types of setups you can choose from. Most of the time, these establishments provide individual desks for those working alone and larger desks for those working in groups. Companies can also rent private offices. Some co-working spaces even offer customized offices for larger teams.

The best part is no matter what layout you choose, you’ll have access to the establishment’s amenities. Most of the time, these include board rooms, event spaces, and even pantries.

3. Encourages Work-Life Balance

Individuals working from home frequently struggle to separate their professional and personal lives. Co-working spaces address this issue by providing a physical space for those who lack conducive work setups at home. Because these communal workspaces mimic an office environment, remote workers can come here to focus on their tasks without disrupting their personal day-to-day activities at home.

In other words, co-working spaces allow them to be productive, get their jobs done, and then go home to spend dedicated family or alone time.

4. Expands Your Network and Community

Another problem remote workers experience is a feeling of isolation. In a traditional office setup, you work side by side with your colleagues, building a sense of community and rapport over time. Though many companies that work remotely address this issue by building strong online communities, the physical distance from other people can still be overwhelming.

Working amongst like-minded people in co-working spaces can help ease the mental burden on remote workers. Moreover, networking and collaboration are encouraged in communal work spaces, often hosting social events among members.

5. Offers a Cheaper Alternative to Building a Home Office

To adapt to the remote work setup, some individuals have opted to build offices or work setups in their own houses. This approach is ideal for those who foresee working from home in the long term. However, it can be costly and impractical for those following a hybrid office schedule or intending to switch jobs or careers in the near future.

When you build a home office or desk setup, you need to consider the costs of renovation, furniture, and work-related appliances. You also have to take into account any possible spikes in your utility bills, such as electricity and internet connection. If you’re not yet in a position to cover these costs, a co-working space is the next best thing. You’ll have access to all necessary amenities for only a few bucks per hour or a little more for monthly memberships.
